DESCRIPTION:Ce projet résulte de la réflexion impulsée lors de l’atelier méthodologique Community Building at the Cinema (MSH Paris Nord\, 14 juin 2019). Il entreprend d’interroger les interactions intra et intercommunautaires suscitées par l’implantation des projections cinématographiques en dehors des pôles dominants de la production de films dans la première moitié du XXe siècle. \nLe projet articule un programme de recherche mobilisant l’histoire sociale et culturelle\, l’anthropologie\, les sciences de l’information et de la communication et les études cinématographiques\, avec des recherches en archives sur des terrains peu explorés\, la constitution d’un réseau international de chercheur.es\, une programmation de films et un volet formation\, avec l’organisation de ce séminaire et la participation de professeur·es invité·es. \nProgramme\nJacqueline Maingard (University of Bristol)\nHistorical film audiences in Africa: A research matrix \nThis presentation will discuss what I am calling a ‘matrix’ of methods and sources for research into historical film audiences in Africa\, and particularly in South Africa\, within the context of the wider Southern African region and other parts of the African continent.\nFirst\, it will briefly track some key\, formative\, historical contexts including: film screenings for African mineworkers\, and the Mines Compound Cinema Circuit in South Africa and other parts of Africa; the travels and travails of itinerant showmen\, especially the African intellectual Sol T. Plaatje; perceptions of African audiences on the part of colonial administrators\, missionaries and anthropologists\, and relevant related records and publications; the infiltration and dominance of major Hollywood studios in Africa; and the impacts of Hollywood genres. The remainder of the presentation will focus primarily on my research into recorded memories in archival life history accounts\, while showing how a variety of selected sources can reveal significant historical detail where there are otherwise archival lacunae.\nThese sources include government documents and reports of government commissions; studio memoranda\, reports\, and letters; photographs and artistic renditions of places and spaces no longer extant (in my case demolished under apartheid legislation); personal memoirs; and short stories and novels. \nDong Hoon Kim (University of Oregon)\nFilm spectatorship in colonial Korea and the tensions of modernity \nDrawing on theories of film spectatorship and reception\, Dr. Kim’s lecture will try to extend the topography of colonial Korean film history by bringing to light neglected and forgotten aspects of colonial Korean cinema (1910-1945).\nDespite the conspicuous dearth of local films that account for at best five percent of all the films screened at movie theaters in the colonial period and their unavailability today\, existing studies focus exclusively on Korean film texts and filmmakers in narrating colonial film history.
