Abstract

The project « Sound Archives: Artistic Creation and Reinterpretation of a Choreo-Musical Phenomenon – The Case of the Hybridization of Candomblé », developedover two years, explores an ancestral Afro-Brazilian ritual through a transdisciplinary approach bridging arts and social sciences. It combines academic exchanges, workshops, and mediations on this Afro-descendant ritual, along with the publication of a bilingual book blending essays and art works, a double vinyl record juxtaposing photographic and musical archives from the Pierre Verger Foundation and American researcher Lorenzo Turner with contemporary remixes, and concerts bringing together Candomblé artists and contemporary musicians. Methodologically, the project draws on the notion of « assemblage », a concept developed by Arnaud Zohou, which describes Vodun and Candomblé as coherent identity structures capable of adapting to socio-political challenges. It unfolds in threephases: research, production and dissemination, followed by artistic events, whilecritically examining initiatives of reinterpretation and artistic hybridization, the biases of ethnomusicology, and the identity dynamics linked to Afro-descendant practices in the contemporary era.
