Abstract

Beyond institutional frameworks of work, the project examines how migrant workers –particularly South Asian women aged 55 to 75 in northern Italy – embody ageing within the domestic and emotional infrastructures they themselves support. Based on long-termethnography and adopting a feminist/decolonial perspective, the analysis highlights the physical and emotional tensions experienced by those who manage the decline of others while facing their own physical limitations. Inspired by Puar’s (2017) notion of ‘debilitation’ – understood as the wear and tear produced by work and care regimes – psychophysical exhaustion is seen as a structural condition resulting from the decline of the welfare state in the 21st century. Two study days and a monographic issue will promote critical exchange between researchers in France and Italy, giving a voice to migrant carers.
